The Community Care Project: A Question for Our Neighbors
I have lived here for 22 years, and I have never seen an ice storm like this. But amidst the stress, I read a corporate report from a major retailer complaining that a "lack of storms" was hurting their profits. That moment confirmed something for me: I never want to view a disaster as a sales opportunity. I want to view it as a chance to serve. I try to teach my children—who are part of my team—the importance of helping others. My wife and two youngest even came out to help on this occasion. Now, after 5 years in business—and with deep gratitude to the clients who helped us reach this milestone—this storm has led me to consider an alternative path forward. I have an idea to help our neighbors, and I’m curious if you are with me. From 2,000 Interactions to One Big Idea My recent posts about kindness received incredible engagement—over 2,000 people reacted, commented, shared, or saved them. The kind words were refreshing, but they also forced me to reflect on a gap we see every season. We constantly receive calls from folks who have spent a lifetime caring for their homes but, due to age, disability, or health issues, can no longer do the work. They risk injury trying to shovel snow or mow grass just to avoid municipal fines because they cannot afford professional rates. The Idea: People Over Profit I am curious if we can build a sustainable model to help. I have crunched the numbers so that any profit is redirected entirely to expand the program to more people and cover a larger area. The potential scale depends on you: The Start: If just 350 people (approximately the number of likes on my recent post about kindness) chipped in just $7 a month (the cost of one Starbucks or 7Brew), we could provide full-service care—mowing, weeding, and snow/ice removal—to at least 12 neighbors in need. The Vision: If the 2,000 people who engaged with us during the storm joined in, we could provide that same level of care to more than 70 neighbors in our community. We Are Not Asking for Money Yet Right now, we are simply collecting data to gauge interest. We need to know if there are enough people willing to support this to make it viable. Transparency & Trust (If We Move Forward) We know that trust is earned. If the community supports this, here is the structure we will use: A Separate Account: Contributions will be held in a dedicated bank account, completely separate from Serious Lawn’s general operating funds. Clear Invoicing: When a bill for a "neighbor in need" becomes due, it is paid from this dedicated account to the business to cover the costs of labor and equipment. Annual Reporting: We will send an annual update to all contributors detailing the total funds collected, the number of properties serviced, and our progress toward expanding this mission to new areas. We Need Your Feedback Please fill out the form below. Please use this form only for community support feedback so these responses are filtered separately from our normal business operations. I will personally follow up with everyone who responds to share the results and let you know if we are moving forward.
